Condition

Podcast 1 · Introduction

In this course, condition means the most general sense — the overall character or quality of something. A related lesson is the conditional course. One citation is the Cambridge English entry, and a second is the Cambridge learner entry. Encyclopaedic background is in Condition.

Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: Today's word is Condition — noun and verb, pronounced kun-DISH-un, in IPA /kənˈdɪʃ.ən/.

Narrator: Condition has extraordinary range across everyday and technical English.

Narrator: As a noun, a condition is first the state something is in: the car is in excellent condition, the building is in poor condition, working conditions, weather conditions. This is the most general sense — the overall character or quality of something at a given moment.

Narrator: A condition is also a requirement that must be met — a precondition for something else to happen. The offer is subject to conditions. Terms and conditions. You can have the car on condition that you service it first. This is the logical sense: if the condition is satisfied, then the consequence follows.

Narrator: A condition is also a medical complaint or chronic illness: a heart condition, a skin condition, a pre-existing condition. In medical language, condition is a careful, neutral word — more inclusive and less stigmatising than disease or disorder.

Narrator: As a verb, to condition means to train, habituate, or accustom something to respond in a particular way. Pavlov conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell. Hair conditioner conditions the hair by coating it to make it smoother. You condition yourself to exercise before breakfast.

Narrator: The word came into English in the fourteenth century from the Latin condicio — a stipulation or agreement — from condicere, meaning to speak together or agree. The idea of an agreed-upon state or stipulation underlies the original legal sense.

Narrator: In register, condition is entirely everyday across all its senses — from the landlord's survey report to the medical record to the training regimen.

Narrator: So remember: a condition is both the state things are in and the requirement for things to proceed — and always, the thing we are working to meet or to improve.

Podcast 2 — In conversation

Speaker A: The property is in remarkably good condition for its age. Original fireplaces, all the plaster intact.

Speaker B: Good condition for its age — one of those estate agent phrases that actually means something here. Structural condition is everything in a property.

Speaker A: The funding is available on condition that the project delivers measurable outcomes within eighteen months.

Speaker B: A condition attached to funding — a precondition, a stipulation. The money is released if the condition is met. Very common in grants and contracts.

Speaker A: She has a skin condition that flares in cold weather. She's been managing it for years.

Speaker B: Condition in the medical sense — neutral, respectful, clinical. It encompasses without stigmatising. The word is doing important work there.

Speaker A: People sometimes confuse condition and requirement.

Speaker B: A requirement is something that must be done or provided — it's an obligation. A condition is a state of affairs that must exist for something else to follow — it's logical. You might have a requirement to submit a report. The condition for funding might be that the report is submitted. Requirements are obligations; conditions are logical prerequisites.

Speaker A: And don't confuse condition and circumstance. Circumstances are the external factors surrounding a situation — the broader context. Conditions are more specific states that must be met or are being assessed. The circumstances of the accident were unclear; the road conditions were poor. Circumstance is context; condition is state.

Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering

Speaker B: Scenario one — a conditional logic prompt.

Design a condition-based workflow engine for a no-code automation platform. Users define conditions using a visual rule builder: field value comparisons, date range conditions, status enum conditions, and compound conditions using AND, OR, and NOT operators. Each condition triggers an action when met: send email, update record, create task, or call webhook. Conditions are evaluated in real time as data changes. Log every condition evaluation with result and timestamp.

Speaker B: Compound conditions with AND, OR, and NOT operators cover the full range of logical conditions that real business rules require.

Speaker A: Logging every condition evaluation with result creates the audit trail that lets users debug why an automation did or did not fire.

Speaker B: Next — a medical records prompt.

Create a PostgreSQL schema for a patient condition management system. Tables: patients, conditions, condition_history, medications, condition_interactions. conditions stores patient_id, condition_name, icd_10_code, diagnosed_date, severity enum mild, moderate, severe, status enum active, in_remission, resolved, and managing_clinician_id. condition_interactions stores pairs of condition_ids with interaction_type enum complicates, contraindicates, related, and a clinical_note. An alert fires when a new condition interacts with an existing one.

Speaker A: Condition_interactions table with contraindicates enum is the clinical safety feature that flags when a new diagnosis affects treatment options for existing conditions.

Speaker B: Right. Now a contract management prompt.

Build a contract condition tracker for a procurement platform. Each contract has a set of conditions that must be satisfied before payment is released: deliverable submitted, quality inspection passed, invoice received, and approval from budget holder. The tracker shows condition status per contract: which conditions are met (green), which are pending (amber), and which are overdue (red). A payment hold is automatically applied when any condition is unmet.

Speaker B: Payment hold applied automatically when any condition is unmet removes manual tracking from the accounts payable process.

Speaker B: Fourth — a machine learning prompt.

Design a conditional feature flag system for a machine learning experiment platform. Feature flags activate model variants based on conditions: user cohort membership, geographic region, device type, and A/B test assignment. Conditions are evaluated at inference time and the matching model variant is served. Log: which conditions were true, which variant was served, and the outcome. Use condition logs to analyse which condition combinations correlate with best performance.

Speaker A: Conditions evaluated at inference time makes the feature flag dynamic — the same user might get different variants as their conditions change.

Speaker B: Fifth — a property inspection prompt.

Design a property condition reporting tool for a surveyor app. Surveyors complete a structured condition assessment: each building element (roof, walls, floors, windows, heating, plumbing, electrics) is rated on condition from 1 to 5 with photographic evidence attached. The tool generates a condition report with an overall condition score, a priority action list for items rated 1 or 2, and an estimated remediation cost range. Reports are exported as PDF.

Speaker B: Priority action list for items rated 1 or 2 gives the property buyer the immediately actionable information from the full condition report.

Speaker B: Sixth — a full small app.

Build a single-page web app called Condition Monitor — a system health dashboard for developers. User adds services from a list: API, database, cache, message queue, and external integrations. For each service, the user sets condition thresholds: response time, error rate, and uptime percentage. The dashboard polls each service every 30 seconds and shows condition status: healthy, degraded, or critical. Alert banner appears when any service condition turns critical. All config in localStorage.

Speaker A: Condition thresholds set per service by the user makes the monitor adaptable to services with very different normal operating conditions.

Speaker B: That's the lesson — condition spans state, requirement, medical complaint, and logical prerequisite. In system design, it names the evaluation that governs what happens next. In health platforms, it names the clinical reality that shapes treatment. In contracts, it names the hurdle that must be cleared before the next step.
