Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: GEO is a noun, an acronym pronounced as three letters: G-E-O, standing for Generative Engine Optimization, in IPA /ˌdʒiː iː ˈəʊ/.

Narrator: In plain English, GEO is the practice of engineering your content so that generative AI engines — such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude — synthesise and cite it as their response.

Narrator: Where traditional SEO puts a link in a list, GEO makes your content the answer itself. The AI does not point to you — it speaks with your words.

Narrator: The term was formally introduced in 2023 by researchers at Princeton University, who studied what makes content more or less likely to appear in AI-generated responses.

Narrator: They found that statistics, citations, quotations from experts, and clear structured answers dramatically increased the chance of being included in generative responses. That study defined the GEO discipline.

Narrator: GEO and AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — are closely related synonyms. Some practitioners use AEO for voice assistants and GEO for text-based generative systems, but in practice the terms are used interchangeably.

Narrator: The register is technical and forward-looking, used by content engineers, AI strategists, and digital marketers preparing for a world where AI synthesis is the primary discovery channel.

Narrator: In an age of AI answers, visibility is no longer about being found — it is about being quoted.

Speaker A: We spent three months producing a comprehensive guide on cognitive enhancement, and when someone asks ChatGPT about it, we get no mention at all.

Speaker B: That is a GEO problem. Your content may rank well in Google, but GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is a different game entirely.

Speaker A: How different?

Speaker B: With traditional SEO, you optimise for a position in a list. With GEO, you are engineering your content to be the material the AI uses when it writes its answer. The AI has to trust you enough to synthesise your words.

Speaker A: So our guide needs to be rewritten for GEO?

Speaker B: It needs GEO signals added to it. Lead with a crisp direct answer in the first two sentences. Add specific statistics — AI systems love citable numbers. Quote a recognised authority. Include an FAQ section.

Speaker A: AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — I have heard that term too. Are they the same?

Speaker B: Almost identical. AEO and GEO both describe the same practice of optimising for AI-generated answers. AEO is the slightly older term, often associated with voice assistants. GEO came from the Princeton research in 2023 and is more associated with text-based generative systems. In practice, people use them interchangeably.

Speaker A: What is the biggest GEO mistake people make?

Speaker B: Writing content that explains rather than answers. AI systems want a clear, direct answer up front, then supporting detail. Most web content does the opposite — it buries the answer at the end. Flip the structure and your GEO score improves immediately.

Speaker B: GEO tells the AI to think about generative discoverability, citation signals, and structured answers. It sharpens every content and analytics prompt. Let me walk you through it.

Speaker A: Content analysis first?

Speaker B: GEO scorer:

Speaker B: Build a GEO content scorer. Score the text on six signals: statistics present, expert citations, direct answer in first 50 words, FAQ section, quotations, word count 400-2000. Show a teal GEO gauge and one tip per failed signal.

Speaker A: The six signals are very concrete.

Speaker B: Exactly — GEO makes them measurable. Database schema now.

Speaker B: GEO tracking schema:

Speaker B: Design a PostgreSQL schema to track GEO performance. Tables: pages, geo_signals (stats, citations, direct_answer, faq, quotes, word_count, score), geo_citations by AI engine name. Index by page_id and date.

Speaker A: Tracking citations by AI engine is really smart.

Speaker B: It is the only way to measure GEO by channel. HR knowledge base next.

Speaker B: GEO knowledge base:

Speaker B: Build an HR knowledge base engineered for GEO. Each article: one-sentence direct answer, 200-word explanation, one cited statistic, one expert quote, one FAQ block. Left sidebar navigation. Export as JSON for schema markup.

Speaker A: Every article has the full GEO structure by design.

Speaker B: Right — the template forces GEO compliance. Dashboard now.

Speaker B: GEO dashboard:

Speaker B: Build a GEO monitoring dashboard. Bar chart of GEO score per page, colour-coded: teal above 70, amber 40-69, red below 40. Top-10 pages table sorted by GEO score. Filter by date range and AI engine.

Speaker A: Filtering by AI engine is essential for measuring which platforms cite you.

Speaker B: Precisely. Full app now.

Speaker B: GEO optimiser app:

Speaker B: Create a full GEO optimisation app. Paste a URL, fetch the page text, run GEO analysis, show score breakdown, then auto-generate a GEO-optimised intro paragraph and an FAQ block ready to replace the existing ones.

Speaker A: That is a complete GEO workflow — analyse, score, and rewrite.

Speaker B: Five prompts, all driven by three letters. GEO tells the AI exactly what to measure, cite, and generate.
