Definition

A private computer network using internet protocols and technologies, accessible only to an organisation's members or staff; a local or restricted network that functions like the internet but is not publicly accessible.

Origin

From intra- (within) + net(work), modelled on internet. Intra- from Latin intra (within, inside). The term emerged in the mid-1990s as organisations began deploying internal TCP/IP networks separate from the public internet.
