The indigenous peoples of the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland; their language (Inuktitut and related dialects); (adjective) relating to these peoples or their culture.

Origin

From Inuktitut Inuit, the plural of Inuk (person), meaning 'people' or 'the real people'. The word replaced 'Eskimo' in formal Canadian and international usage from the 1970s onward, following the preference of the peoples themselves.
