A chemical element of atomic number 53, a violet-black crystalline solid that sublimes to a violet vapour; an essential trace element for thyroid function; formerly used as an antiseptic.
Origin
From French iode (iodine), from Greek ioeides (violet-coloured), from ion (violet flower) + eidos (form, appearance). Named by French chemist Joseph Gay-Lussac in 1813 after the violet colour of its vapour.
