Intelligence Quotient; a score derived from standardised tests designed to measure human intelligence; by extension, a measure of intellectual ability.
Origin
The term Intelligence Quotient was coined by German psychologist William Stern in 1912. IQ was originally calculated as (mental age / chronological age) × 100. The abbreviation IQ became standard in English from the early 20th century. Modern IQ tests use deviation IQ, where 100 is defined as the population mean.
