Definition
A type of saw with a fine blade for cutting curved or intricate shapes; a jigsaw puzzle, in which a picture is cut into irregularly shaped pieces to be reassembled.
Origin
From jig (a device for guiding tools) + saw. The jigsaw as a mechanical saw for cutting irregular curves was named for its use with a jig or guide. Jigsaw puzzles were originally called 'dissected maps' before the jigsaw saw was used to cut them. The term 'jigsaw puzzle' emerged in the early 20th century.
