A Japanese martial art and Olympic sport derived from jujutsu, based on principles of using an opponent's weight and movement against them rather than relying on brute strength; it was developed by Jigoro Kano in 1882.
Origin
From Japanese jūdō (柔道), from jū (gentle, yielding, flexible) + dō (way, path). The name means 'the gentle way' or 'the way of yielding'. Judo was introduced to the West in the late 19th century.
