Origin
From Urdu khākī (dusty, dust-coloured), from Persian khāk (dust, earth). The word was adopted by the British Indian Army in the 19th century for their field uniforms. The Guides Corps was among the first to adopt khaki uniforms in the 1840s–50s as camouflage in the sub-continent's terrain.
