Origin
From French kiosque, from Ottoman Turkish köşk (a pavilion, a summerhouse), from Persian kūshk (palace, portico). The word came to European languages via the Ottoman empire, where köşk referred to open-sided pavilions in palace gardens. Used in English from the early 19th century.
