Origin
Derived from the Phoenician letter lamedh, which represented an ox goad or staff. The letter passed through the Greek lambda (Λ/λ) and Latin L into the English alphabet. The Phoenician lamedh was a stafflike shape whose descendants retained the consonant value /l/. In use in English since the Old English period.
