Origin
From Old French label or lambel (a narrow band, a strip), possibly from Frankish *labba or *lappa (a lappet, a flap). The heraldic sense of a label as a horizontal bar with pendant strips in coats of arms is the oldest sense. Used in English from the 14th century.
