A complicated network of paths or passages in which it is difficult to find one's way. Used literally for a maze-like structure and figuratively for any complex, confusing system or situation.
Origin
Late Middle English, via Latin from Greek labyrinthos. Possibly of pre-Greek Aegean origin. Associated with the legendary structure built by Daedalus on Crete to contain the Minotaur in Greek mythology.
