A small flying beetle with a domed back, typically red or orange with black spots; known in North America as a ladybug; beneficial insects that feed primarily on aphids and other crop pests.
Origin
From Lady (the Virgin Mary) + bird (a general term for small creatures in Middle English, not restricted to avians). The beetle was named Our Lady's Bird or Lady Bird in medieval tradition, associated with the Virgin Mary — its red colour associated with her cloak and the black spots with her sorrows. Used in English from the 17th century.
