A cover placed over a light bulb or lamp, typically made of fabric, paper, or glass, designed to diffuse or direct light and prevent glare.
Origin
From lamp (from Old French lampe, Latin lampas, Greek lampas — a torch, from lampein, to shine) + shade (from Old English scead — shadow, shelter from light). The lampshade as a domestic object became common with the development of gas lighting in the 19th century and electric lighting in the early 20th century.
