A deciduous coniferous tree of the genus Larix, found in cold mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere; notable for being one of the few conifers that sheds its needles in autumn, producing spectacular golden colour before leaf drop.
Origin
From German Lärche, from Latin larix (the larch tree), possibly from an Alpine language. The word entered English in the 16th century. Larix laricina is the American larch or tamarack; Larix decidua is the European larch, widely planted in British uplands.
