A cool room or cupboard used for storing food, especially before the widespread adoption of refrigerators; now also used to describe any food storage area or a well-stocked supply of food.
Origin
From Old French lardier (a place for storing bacon and lard), from lard (bacon, lard), from Latin lardum (lard, fat). The medieval larder was literally a room for storing lard and cured pork. Used in English from the 14th century.
