Origin
An acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Coined in 1959 by physicist Gordon Gould who proposed the name; the first working laser was built by Theodore Maiman in 1960. The underlying physics was developed by Albert Einstein who described stimulated emission in 1917.
