(Noun) an evergreen shrub or tree of the genus Laurus, especially the bay laurel, whose aromatic leaves are used in cooking; a wreath of laurel traditionally awarded as a symbol of victory or distinction; (plural) honour, glory, or achievement; (Verb) to crown with laurel as a mark of honour.
Origin
From Old French lorier, from Latin laurus (the laurel tree). The laurel wreath was the highest honour in ancient Greece and Rome — awarded to victorious athletes, military commanders, and poets. Laureate (as in poet laureate) derives from the same root. Used in English from the 14th century.
