A machine for cutting grass, typically consisting of rotating blades driven by a motor or engine and propelled across the lawn by its wheels or the operator.
Origin
From lawn (an area of short, regularly cut grass, from Old French launde — a glade or clearing) + mower (one that mows, from Old English mawan — to mow). The first mechanical lawnmower was invented by Edwin Budding in 1830 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, inspired by the rotary cutter used in textile mills to produce a uniform finish on cloth.
