A person who is not a member of the clergy; a person who does not have professional or specialist knowledge in a particular subject; a non-expert.

From lay (from Old French lai, from Latin laicus, from Greek laikos — of the people, from laos — the people) + man. In medieval usage, a layman was any person who was not ordained — distinguishing the people from the clergy. The extension to any non-specialist dates from the 17th century.
