Leggings

Noun (plural) · /ˈleɡ.ɪŋz/

Definition
Close-fitting, stretchy trousers covering the legs from waist to ankle, typically made of lycra, spandex, or other elasticated materials; worn as sportswear, casual wear, or fashion garments. Historically also: protective coverings for the legs.
Origin
From leg (from Old Norse leggr — the leg, the limb) + -ing (a suffix denoting garments in English, as in stocking, legging, casing) + -s (plural). Historical leggings were protective coverings strapped over the lower leg; modern leggings as close-fitting trousers developed from exercise and dance wear in the 1970s and 1980s.
