Definition
A malignant disease of the blood-forming tissues characterised by the uncontrolled proliferation of immature or abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow and blood.
Origin
From Greek leukos (white) + haima (blood) — literally white blood. The term was coined in 1847 by Rudolf Virchow, the German pathologist, to describe what he had identified as a distinct disease characterised by abnormal excess of white blood cells. The -aemia suffix (from haima) denotes a blood condition.
