A person who tells lies; someone who says things they know to be untrue with the intention of deceiving others.
Origin
From Old English lēogere (a liar), from lēogan (to lie, to tell an untruth), from Proto-Germanic *leuganan. Related to Old Norse ljúga, Gothic liugan. The word for the person telling lies has been in English since Old English and is among the earliest moral vocabulary.
