(British informal) a toilet or bathroom. Also: a card game popular in the 17th–18th centuries.
Origin
Origin uncertain for the toilet sense; possibly from French lieux d'aisances (places of ease — a euphemism for toilet), or from Waterloo, or from the French gardez l'eau (watch out for the water — a warning cry when chamber pot contents were thrown from windows). The toilet sense is attested from the early 20th century. The card game sense is from the 17th century, from lanterloo, a French game name.
