Definition

A harbour or small port with moorings for pleasure craft, yachts, and small boats, typically with facilities including fuel, electricity, water, and shore services.

Origin

From Italian or Spanish marina (seafront, seashore), from Latin marinus (of the sea), from mare (sea). The word entered English in the twentieth century as purpose-built leisure boat harbours became a distinct facility type, distinct from working commercial or fishing harbours. The same Latin mare root gives marine, maritime, submarine, and the lunar mare.
