A person, animal, or object adopted as a symbol by a group or organisation, believed to bring good luck; a team mascot; any person or thing considered to bring luck.
Origin
From French mascotte (charm, lucky charm), from Provençal mascotto (sorcery, charm), from masco (witch, sorcerer), from Old Provençal masca (witch). The word was popularised in French by Édouard Audran's operetta La Mascotte (1880), about a girl who brings good luck to whoever she works for, which became a huge success and spread the word across Europe.
