From Old French maisonnerie, from masson (mason). Masonry in the sense of stonework or brickwork is one of the oldest building arts, documented from prehistoric construction through to modern conservation. Masonry in the sense of Freemasonry is a shorthand for the fraternal organisation whose full name references the craft.
