A person who repairs and maintains machinery, especially motor vehicles; more broadly, any person skilled in the operation or repair of mechanical systems. Also used as an adjective (mechanical) or in technical contexts to describe underlying rules or systems (game mechanics, narrative mechanics).
Origin
From Latin mechanicus, from Greek mekhanikos (of machines), from mekhane (machine, device). Entered English in the sixteenth century. Originally referred to any manual craftsperson; the narrower motor-vehicle sense developed in the late nineteenth century alongside the automobile.
