Mep

Noun (Acronym) · /mɛp/

Definition
Member of the European Parliament; an elected representative of the citizens of a European Union member state who serves in the European Parliament — the directly elected legislative assembly of the European Union. The European Parliament is elected every five years by citizens of the EU's member states.
Origin
MEP is an initialism/acronym standing for Member of the European Parliament. The European Parliament in its modern directly-elected form dates from 1979, when the first direct elections were held across the then nine member states of the European Economic Community. Before 1979, the Parliament consisted of delegated members of national parliaments. MEP became a standard English-language abbreviation with the development of direct elections.
