A heavy, silvery-white metallic element (symbol Hg) that is liquid at room temperature; also: the Roman messenger god; the planet nearest the Sun; and by extension, a byword for speed, volatility, and quicksilver wit.

Origin

From Latin Mercurius — the Roman god of trade, travel, and communication, identified with Greek Hermes. The metal was named for its liquid mobility, likened to the god's swiftness. Element symbol Hg comes from Latin hydrargyrum (liquid silver).
