(Adjective) relating to the metric system of measurement (based on metres, kilograms, and litres); relating to measurement generally; (Noun) a standard of measurement; a quantitative indicator used to assess performance, progress, or quality; (in poetry/music) relating to metre or rhythm.
Origin
From French métrique, from Greek metrikos (of or relating to measure), from metron (measure, metre). The same metron root gives metre, geometry (earth measurement), thermometer (heat measure), diameter, barometer, and symmetry. The metric system was developed in France during the Revolution, formally adopted in 1795, and was intended to be a universal, rational measurement system based on natural constants rather than arbitrary historical units.
