(Adjective) possessing great power, strength, or force; large and impressive; formidable; (Adverb, informal, chiefly North American) very; extremely (mighty fine, mighty cold).
Origin
From Old English mihtig (powerful, strong, mighty), from miht (power, might, force) + the suffix -ig (having the quality of). The miht root comes from Proto-Germanic *mahtiz (ability, power), related to Old Norse máttr, Old High German maht, and the verb may (from Proto-Germanic *magan, to be able). The adverbial use (mighty fine) is primarily an American English feature, more dialectal and informal than standard British English.
