The hard aromatic seed of the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), native to the Banda Islands; ground or grated as a spice. Also used as a verb in football: to pass the ball between an opponent's legs.
Origin
From Old French nois muguede, from Medieval Latin nux myristica. The word reached English by the 14th century via spice trade routes from the Moluccas (Spice Islands).
