Definition
To begin or arise from a particular source; to have a particular starting point or place of origin; to create or initiate something — to cause something to begin.
Origin
From Medieval Latin originatus (past participle of originare, to give origin to, to bring into being), from Latin origo/originis (source, beginning, from oriri, to rise, to be born). The intransitive sense (the practice originates in Scotland) and the transitive sense (who originated this idea?) both being well-established in English from the seventeenth century. The same root as original, origin, originally, originator, and aboriginal.
