Definition
Not having happened or arrived by the expected time; late beyond a deadline or schedule. Also used positively to mean something that should have happened long ago and is welcome now it finally has.
Origin
From over- (beyond) + due (expected at a set time, from Old French deu, owed). In regular English use from the 19th century, originally in financial and shipping contexts.
