Definition
A sudden, uncontrollable wave of fear or anxiety that impairs rational thought and often triggers hasty, counterproductive action. As a verb: to be seized by such fear. Panic is distinguished from ordinary fear by its sudden onset and its tendency to override clear thinking.
Origin
From French panique, from Greek panikon — of Pan, the Greek god of the wild. Pan was said to cause sudden, irrational terror in travellers crossing remote mountains and forests. The word carries the god's name to this day.
