A smooth, oval, thin-shelled nut with a rich, buttery flavour, produced by the pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis), native to North America — widely used in baking, confectionery, and cooking, especially in American cuisine (pecan pie being the most celebrated preparation). Also the tree itself.
Origin
From French pacane, from Illinois Algonquin pakani — a general term for nuts requiring a stone to crack. The pecan tree being native to the Mississippi River valley and surrounding regions of North America, and being a significant food source for Native American peoples long before European settlement. The word entering English through French colonial Louisiana, where the nut was already an important local product. The pecan being the state tree of Texas.
