Origin
The word derives from Latin pietas, a central concept in Roman culture meaning dutiful conduct — devotion to the gods, loyalty to family, and faithfulness to one's obligations. Pietas was considered one of the chief Roman virtues. The word passed through Old French piete into English in the thirteenth century. Interestingly, the word pity shares the same Latin origin, having split off to mean compassion while piety retained the sense of devotion.
