Noun · /ˈpɪksi/ · a small magical fairy-like creature from British folklore
Definition
A pixie is a mythical creature from the folklore of Cornwall and Devon in south-west England — small, mischievous, pointed-eared, and possessed of magical powers. Pixies are said to lead travellers astray, steal horses, and play pranks on humans. In modern usage, pixie often describes something small, impish, or delightfully mischievous.
Origin
Origin uncertain. Possibly from Swedish dialect pyske (small fairy), or from Cornish traditions of the pobel vean (little people). First recorded in English in the early 17th century. The variant spellings pixy and pixie have coexisted for centuries.
