RPM

Abbreviation · /ˌɑːpiːˈem/ · revolutions per minute — a measure of rotational speed

Definition
RPM stands for revolutions per minute — the number of complete rotations a rotating object makes in one minute. It is the standard unit for measuring rotational speed in engines, motors, audio equipment, hard drives, and industrial machinery. The higher the RPM, the faster the rotation. A car engine at idle runs at roughly 600–900 RPM; at full throttle it may reach 6,000–8,000 RPM. A hard disk drive typically spins at 5,400 or 7,200 RPM.
Origin
The abbreviation emerged with industrial measurement in the nineteenth century as steam engines and mechanical systems required precise speed specifications. RPM became universal across engineering, automotive, and electronics industries. It sits alongside related measures such as RPS (revolutions per second) and radians per second, but RPM remains the most widely understood and cited in everyday technical and consumer contexts.
