Noun · /θʌɡ/ · a violent or brutal criminal; a rough and dangerous person
Definition
A thug is a violent, brutish person — someone who uses physical force or intimidation to get what they want, often for criminal purposes. The word carries a tone of contempt and threat. It is used in journalism, crime fiction, police reports, and ordinary conversation to describe anyone from a street criminal to an enforcer working for organised crime. The word is direct, blunt, and unambiguous. It does not require explanation.
Origin
From Hindi ṭhag, meaning a swindler or thief, itself from Sanskrit sthaga — one who covers up or conceals. The word reached English in the early nineteenth century through British colonial administration in India, where the Thuggee — a secret fraternity of robbers and murderers — became notorious. Colonial authorities suppressed the Thuggee in the 1830s, but the word thug entered everyday English and over time broadened far beyond its original context. Today it means any violent criminal, with no connection to India required.
