Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: Welcome. Today's word is trend — both a noun and a verb, pronounced TREND, with the IPA /trend/.

Narrator: A trend is a general direction in which something is changing or developing — the way things are moving over time.

Narrator: In plain English, a trend is a pattern or drift: prices on an upward trend, or a popular style that everyone suddenly follows.

Narrator: As a verb, to trend means to move in a direction, or, online, to become very popular very quickly — a topic that's trending.

Narrator: It comes from Old English trendan, meaning to turn or roll — the same root behind 'trundle', a slow rolling motion.

Narrator: From that idea of turning, trend grew to mean the way a thing turns or leans over time, and finally a popular wave online.

Narrator: So sales follow an upward trend, fashion sets the latest trends, and a hashtag can suddenly start trending worldwide.

Narrator: Remember it this way: a trend is the direction things are heading. A drift, a pattern, a wave moving over time.

Podcast 2 — In conversation

Speaker A: Have you noticed the trend lately? Everyone seems to be switching to those bulky retro trainers again.

Speaker B: A trend there is a popular wave — something many people start doing around the same time.

Speaker A: True. And at work we say 'sales are trending upward', meaning the general direction is rising over time.

Speaker B: Quick tip — trend has two flavours. One is a popular fashion; the other is a general direction in data or behaviour.

Speaker A: Right. So 'a worrying trend' means a pattern heading the wrong way, not just something fashionable.

Speaker B: Exactly. Just don't confuse a one-off spike with a trend — a trend is a steady direction, not a single jump.

Speaker A: Is 'fad' a synonym?

Speaker B: Close, but a fad fades fast and shallow; a trend usually lasts longer and reflects a real, ongoing direction.

Speaker A: Helpful. So I'll follow the trend, but watch out for a passing fad.

Speaker B: Perfect use — a direction over time, or a popular wave.

Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering

Speaker B: Today we'll use the word trend to prompt an AI for charts, analytics, and spotting the direction in data over time.

Speaker A: Useful — dashboards live on trends, so a trend theme fits charts, insights, and tracking change perfectly.

Speaker B: Let's start with a sales chart.

Prompt: Build a sales dashboard that shows the monthly trend as a clean line chart, draws a trend line through the points, and labels whether the trend is rising or falling compared with last month.

Speaker B: The word trend tells the AI we care about direction over time, so it builds a line chart that shows the movement clearly.

Speaker A: Useful. What about a trending list?

Prompt: Create a trending section that ranks posts by how fast their views are rising, show the top trending items today, and add a small up or down arrow next to each one's trend.

Speaker B: Now the database — keep names plain.

Prompt: Design a database schema for tracking metrics over time, store each value with a date, index the date so trend queries are fast, and make it easy to read a daily and a monthly trend.

Speaker A: Clear. Could one prompt build the whole tool?

Prompt: Build a simple analytics app where the user picks a metric, sees its trend over the last year as a chart, and gets one plain sentence summarising whether the trend is going up or down.

Speaker B: For an alert, lean on direction.

Prompt: Add an alert that watches the error rate trend, warns me when the trend climbs three days in a row, and shows a small chart of the recent trend so I can see it at a glance.

Speaker A: One more — a forecast?

Prompt: Create a simple forecast that extends the current trend a few weeks ahead, draws the predicted trend as a dotted line, and clearly marks where real data ends and the trend guess begins.

Speaker B: See the pattern: the word trend steers the AI toward direction over time, perfect for charts and analytics. Clear and memorable.

Speaker A: Love it. Trend means the direction over time — I'll keep it for charts, dashboards, and analytics prompts.
