Verb & Noun · /ʌpˈdeɪt/ · to make current; a piece of new or recent information
Definition
To update something is to bring it to a more current, accurate, or complete state. As a noun, an update is the new information or version that results from that action. The word works equally as verb and noun: you update a system; you receive an update.
Origin
Update emerged in English in the mid-nineteenth century, formed from the prefix up- meaning to a higher or better state, and date, from Old French and Latin data — the time at which something is given or recorded. By the twentieth century update became essential vocabulary for journalism, then computing.
