Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: Today's word is widely — an adverb, pronounced WIDE-lee, IPA /ˈwaɪd.li/.

Narrator: Widely means over a large area, among many people, or to a great extent — done, known, or spread broadly.

Narrator: Plain English: if something is widely used, lots of people use it; if views differ widely, they differ a great deal.

Narrator: It's built from wide plus the adverb ending -ly, which turns the adjective wide into a word describing how something is done.

Narrator: That -ly ending is the great adverb-maker in English — quick to quickly, wide to widely, broad to broadly.

Narrator: Over time widely grew two main flavours: broad reach — widely known — and great degree — opinions vary widely.

Narrator: So it can describe how far something spreads, or how much things differ — both rooted in the idea of breadth.

Narrator: The register is neutral and common, especially in writing about knowledge, use, travel, and difference.

Narrator: Widely is breadth in action — known far, used everywhere, and stretched across people and places.

Podcast 2 — In conversation

Speaker A: That author is widely read, isn't she? Her books are sold widely — you see them in every shop.

Speaker B: Hugely. She's widely admired too. And she's travelled widely, which really shows in her writing.

Speaker A: That's a lovely use — travelled widely. So widely can mean over a large area, like all over the place.

Speaker B: Exactly. Widely spread, widely available, widely known — all about broad reach. But it has a second sense too.

Speaker A: The degree one — like opinions vary widely?

Speaker B: Right. There it means by a great amount. Prices vary widely. Views differ widely. It's about how much, not how far.

Speaker A: What's the difference between widely and broadly, then?

Speaker B: Close cousins. Widely leans towards far and wide — widely travelled. Broadly leans towards in general terms — broadly speaking. You wouldn't say broadly travelled.

Speaker A: So widely is more about actual spread or amount.

Speaker B: Nicely put. And it's spelled W-I-D-E-L-Y — wide keeps its E before the -ly. Not widly; widely.

Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering

Speaker B: Let's look at how widely works in AI prompts. As an adverb of reach it's great for popularity, distribution, and variation features.

Speaker A: Widely as broad reach — the AI surfaces what's popular or far-spread?

Speaker B: Exactly. It signals scale and spread. First prompt — a popularity view:

Prompt: Build a dashboard showing which products are widely bought. Rank items by how widely they sell across regions, highlight the most widely purchased, and flag any sold only narrowly.

Speaker B: Widely tells the AI to measure spread across many — reach, not just raw count.

Speaker A: The popularity view is clear. What about distribution?

Speaker B: Here:

Prompt: Build a map showing where an article was widely shared. Plot every region where it spread widely, shade areas by how widely it reached, and list the most widely engaged locations.

Speaker A: A reach map — practical. For a database?

Speaker B: Try this:

Prompt: Design a metrics table tracking how widely each post spreads. Store a reach score per region, index it, and let me query which posts travelled most widely across the network.

Speaker A: Reach scores stored cleanly — tidy. For a variation report?

Speaker B: Like this, using the degree sense:

Prompt: Build a report that flags prices varying widely. Compare each product's prices across suppliers, mark items whose cost differs widely, and show how widely the figures spread.

Speaker A: Widely varying prices flagged — useful. And a survey?

Speaker B: Here:

Prompt: Build a survey results page showing where opinions differ widely. Highlight questions where answers vary widely, group the widely split topics, and chart how widely each response spreads.

Speaker A: Widely split opinions surfaced — insightful.

Speaker B: One adverb for reach and degree. Use widely in a prompt and the AI builds spread, popularity, and variation features around it.
