When thinking now about a past event, decision or experience, often with a clearer or different understanding than at the time. For example, “In retrospect, we should have tested the instructions earlier.” The phrase normally appears as in retrospect, with a space; in-retrospect is the dictionary’s entry key. It introduces a present assessment of something earlier, not a decision that takes legal effect from an earlier date. It can express satisfaction, regret or a neutral reassessment and does not necessarily mean that the past decision was wrong.
