Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning

Narrator: Today's word is Consumption — a noun, pronounced kun-SUMP-shun, in IPA /kənˈsʌmp.ʃən/.

Narrator: Consumption is the noun form of consume — the act or process of using up goods, energy, food, or resources; and the amount used in a given period. Energy consumption. Water consumption. Fuel consumption. The consumption of goods and services drives the modern economy.

Narrator: The word came into English in the fourteenth century from the Latin consumptio, from consumere — to take completely. Consumptio in classical Latin meant a using up, a wasting away.

Narrator: And that leads to consumption's most striking historical usage. For centuries, consumption was the common name for pulmonary tuberculosis — the disease now known as TB. Tuberculosis was called consumption because of its characteristic wasting effect: the disease slowly consumed its victims from within, depleting them of weight, strength, and finally life. In the nineteenth century, consumption killed more people in Europe than any other disease. Keats, Chopin, Chekhov, and Kafka all died of it. The Romantic era romanticised consumption — the pale, thin, brilliant artist dying beautifully of an artistic disease. This romanticisation delayed serious public health responses.

Narrator: Robert Koch identified the tuberculosis bacterium in 1882. By the mid-twentieth century, with the development of streptomycin and later combination antibiotic therapy, consumption was effectively treatable. The word itself faded as a medical term as the disease retreated.

Narrator: Today, consumption is primarily economic and environmental. Conspicuous consumption — Veblen's term. Sustainable consumption — the challenge of meeting human needs without depleting natural systems. Consumption-based carbon accounting — measuring emissions not at the point of production but at the point of consumption.

Narrator: In register, consumption is formal in economic and academic contexts, and entirely standard in everyday descriptions of resource use.

Narrator: So remember: consumption is the taking — and what we consume, collectively, determines what remains for those who come after us.

Podcast 2 — In conversation

Speaker A: Our energy consumption is up 30 percent this quarter. We need to look seriously at efficiency measures.

Speaker B: Energy consumption as a cost and an environmental metric — the kind of figure that triggers both the finance team and the sustainability team into action simultaneously.

Speaker A: I was reading about how Romantic writers romanticised consumption — tuberculosis. It seems extraordinary now.

Speaker B: The Romantic romanticisation of consumption is one of the stranger episodes in cultural history. The coughing, the pallor, the thinness — all read as signs of artistic sensitivity and intensity. It took decades of that cultural noise before public health took the disease seriously as a preventable illness.

Speaker A: Sustainable consumption is really the challenge of our generation — how do we maintain living standards without consuming the planet?

Speaker B: The tension between consumption and sustainability is one of the defining political problems of the 21st century. Consumption-based carbon accounting is one tool: measuring who is responsible for emissions at the point of consumption rather than at the point of production.

Speaker A: People sometimes confuse consumption and expenditure.

Speaker B: Expenditure is specifically about money spent. Consumption is broader — it covers the using up of any resource, not just financial ones. You can have high energy consumption with very little financial expenditure if the energy is cheap or subsidised. In economics, household consumption typically means spending on goods and services, so the terms overlap significantly there.

Speaker A: And don't confuse consumption and waste. Consumption means using up a resource for a purpose. Waste is the unused portion that is discarded — or consumption that produces no useful output. You can consume efficiently or wastefully. The goal of sustainable design is to reduce waste without reducing the useful consumption that meets genuine needs.

Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering

Speaker B: Scenario one — a carbon consumption prompt.

Design a consumption-based carbon footprint calculator for an e-commerce platform. Rather than calculating emissions at the point of production, this tool calculates emissions at the point of consumption: for each purchase a user makes, look up the product category carbon intensity in kilograms CO2 per pound spent, multiply by the purchase value, and accumulate the user's consumption-based carbon footprint. Show: monthly footprint, footprint by product category, comparison to UK average consumption footprint, and three highest-impact consumption categories.

Speaker B: Carbon intensity per product category in kg CO2 per pound is the consumption-based accounting unit that converts spending data into emissions data without requiring product-level lifecycle assessments.

Speaker A: Comparison to UK average consumption footprint contextualises the user's data — abstract carbon numbers mean little without a benchmark.

Speaker B: Next — a performance consumption prompt.

Write a memory consumption analysis tool for a Node.js application. The tool profiles: heap memory consumed at startup, peak heap consumption during load tests, memory consumption growth rate per hour in steady state (to detect memory leaks), and consumption by object type using V8 heap snapshots. It outputs a consumption report flagging: objects with growing consumption counts that may indicate leaks, functions with disproportionate memory consumption relative to call frequency, and modules consuming more than 10 percent of total heap.

Speaker A: Memory consumption growth rate per hour in steady state is the leak detector — a healthy process should have flat consumption over time in steady state.

Speaker B: Right. Now a database schema.

Create a PostgreSQL schema for a household resource consumption tracking platform. Tables: households, resources, daily_consumption_logs, billing_periods, consumption_benchmarks. daily_consumption_logs stores household_id, resource_id, consumption_date, consumption_amount numeric, and consumption_unit. resources stores resource_name such as electricity, gas, water, internet_data, unit, and cost_per_unit. consumption_benchmarks stores resource_id, benchmark_type enum uk_average, similar_household, previous_year, and benchmark_value for comparison. billing_periods stores household_id, period_start, period_end, and total_cost_estimated.

Speaker B: Multiple benchmark types including UK average, similar household, and previous year give users three different reference points for understanding whether their consumption is unusual.

Speaker B: Fourth — a sustainable consumption prompt.

Write a 200-word explainer on sustainable consumption for an environmental education platform. Cover: what sustainable consumption means (meeting needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet theirs), the consumption-production gap in global environmental agreements, the concept of sufficiency (consuming enough but not more than enough), how consumption patterns in high-income countries drive disproportionate global environmental impact, and three evidence-based changes that reduce consumption impact without reducing quality of life.

Speaker A: The sufficiency concept — consuming enough but not more — is the philosophical challenge to growth-oriented economics, and it is central to sustainable consumption thinking.

Speaker B: Fifth — a data consumption prompt.

Design a data consumption monitoring and quota system for a mobile application. The system tracks: data consumed per feature within the app (video streaming, map loading, sync operations, push notifications), cumulative consumption against the user's monthly data budget set in app settings, a consumption forecast for the rest of the billing month based on daily average, and a data saver mode that reduces consumption by compressing images, pausing video autoplay, and reducing sync frequency.

Speaker B: Consumption per feature within the app gives users actionable granularity — knowing that video consumes 90 percent of their data allows them to make an informed trade-off.

Speaker B: Sixth — a full small app.

Build a single-page web app called Consumption Dashboard — a personal resource use tracker. User adds resources: electricity (kWh per day), water (litres per day), food budget (pounds per day), screen time (hours per day). For each resource: a weekly consumption log entered manually, a target, and a trend line over 4 weeks. The dashboard shows which resources are trending up (consumption increasing), down (consumption decreasing), or stable. A weekly consumption summary is generated and can be exported as plain text.

Speaker A: Trending up, down, or stable per resource is the direction signal — more useful than a single number because it tells you whether consumption is moving in the right direction.

Speaker B: That's the lesson — consumption is the taking: of energy, of goods, of time, of life. Historically it named the great wasting disease of the nineteenth century. Today it names the economic and environmental challenge of the twenty-first. Measuring consumption clearly is the first step to managing it wisely.

Speaker B: Prompt example:
