Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning
Narrator: Today's word is enlist — a verb, pronounced in-LIST, written /ɪnˈlɪst/.
Narrator: To enlist is to formally join an organisation, most often the armed forces, or to persuade someone else to join a cause or to lend you their support.
Narrator: The word comes from the prefix en-, meaning to put into, and list, from the Old French liste — a roll, a register, a written line of names.
Narrator: So at its core, to enlist is simply to put your name on a list.
Narrator: It entered English in the late sixteenth century, when standing armies began keeping formal muster rolls. To be enlisted was to be written into the regiment's book.
Narrator: Over time the meaning widened. By the nineteenth century you could enlist a friend's help, enlist public sympathy, even enlist the support of the press.
Narrator: Today it carries two registers at once — formal and military when used of the armed forces, and softer and persuasive when used about gathering help.
Narrator: Remember it like this — to enlist anyone or anything, you are simply asking permission to write their name on your list.

Podcast 2 — In conversation
Speaker A: Did you hear my cousin Daniel finally decided to enlist in the Royal Navy?
Speaker B: Really? Good for him. When does he ship out?
Speaker A: September, apparently. He had to enlist before his twenty-sixth birthday or he would have aged out of the entry route he wanted.
Speaker B: Right. And outside the military sense, you can also enlist someone for a much smaller thing — like, I'm going to enlist your help moving the sofa on Saturday.
Speaker A: Exactly. I was actually about to enlist you for that very job.
Speaker B: Ha, walked into that one. Quick question — is enlist the same as recruit?
Speaker A: Close, but slightly different. Recruit is what the organisation does — the army recruits people. Enlist is what the person does — they enlist in the army. The direction is flipped.
Speaker B: Ah, that's a useful distinction. And volunteer?
Speaker A: Volunteer is broader and more casual. You volunteer at a food bank. You enlist when there's a formal commitment — paperwork, a contract, a register.
Speaker B: Got it. Any common slip-up?
Speaker A: Yes — people sometimes say enlist to instead of enlist in. In British English you enlist in the army, not to the army.
Speaker B: Noted. So — Daniel enlisted in the Navy, and I have now been enlisted to carry your sofa. Lovely.
