Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning
Narrator: Welcome. Today's word is 'myth' — a noun.
Narrator: Pronounced MITH, IPA /mɪθ/.
Narrator: A myth is a traditional story — typically featuring gods, heroes, and supernatural events — that explains the origins of the world, natural phenomena, or human customs. More broadly, a myth is a widely held but false belief.
Narrator: In plain English: the story of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods is a myth. The belief that we only use ten percent of our brains is a myth. The word carries two very different weights — one sacred and narrative, one sceptical and corrective.
Narrator: The word comes from the Greek 'mythos', meaning word, speech, or story — used specifically for narrative accounts of sacred events, in contrast to 'logos', which meant reasoned discourse or argument. Myth and logic were the two great modes of Greek thought.
Narrator: In ancient cultures, myths were not considered fiction. They were the deepest truths — accounts of how the world came to be, why suffering exists, what the gods demand, how humans should live. Joseph Campbell, the American scholar of mythology, argued that all myths across all cultures share a common underlying structure — the hero's journey.
Narrator: The second sense — a false popular belief — emerged as modern rationalism challenged traditional accounts. Today, 'that's a myth' means 'that's not true', and it is one of the most common phrases in science journalism.
Narrator: The register is therefore dual: scholarly and reverent in the cultural or literary sense; direct and corrective in the popular sense.
Narrator: Remember this: myth is the story a culture tells to make sense of itself — and the word we use to say that a belief has no basis in fact. It is both the most ancient form of truth and the most common form of error.

Podcast 2 — In conversation
Speaker A: I was fact-checking some content the other day and kept typing 'this is a myth' — and it struck me that the word is doing completely different things depending on context.
Speaker B: That's the interesting double life of myth. In a classics department, myth is a technical term of respect — the foundational stories of a culture. In popular science writing, 'it's a myth' is a debunking move. The same word serves both reverence and scepticism.
Speaker A: What's the difference between a myth and a legend?
Speaker B: Myths typically involve gods and supernatural forces explaining cosmic or natural phenomena — the origin of fire, the creation of the world. Legends are more grounded in historical time and often feature human heroes — Arthur, Robin Hood. Legends might have a kernel of historical truth; myths don't usually claim to be historical in that sense.
Speaker A: And a fable?
Speaker B: A fable is a short story with animals as characters and a clear moral lesson at the end. Aesop's fables. Much more didactic and tightly structured than myths. Myths are vast and ambiguous; fables are compact and moralistic. Very different registers and purposes.
Speaker A: Common mistake with myth?
Speaker B: Using it interchangeably with lie. A myth isn't deliberately false — it's a widely held false belief, usually arising from misunderstanding, tradition, or oversimplification. 'That's a myth' is not an accusation of deception; it's a correction of a shared error. The distinction matters when you're addressing someone who believes it.
Podcast 3 — Prompt engineering
Speaker B: Today we use 'myth' — a foundational narrative or a debunked false belief — to build AI prompts for fact-checking tools, content systems, and cultural databases.
Speaker A: Myth as a content category — it tells the AI whether we're building a cultural archive or a truth-testing tool. The word defines the data and the purpose.
Speaker B: Exactly. Myth in a prompt can mean either: store and present traditional stories respectfully, or detect and correct false beliefs. The context clarifies which.
Speaker B: First prompt — a myth-busting tool.
Speaker A: Myth cards with a confidence score — the debunking is quantified and sourced.
Speaker B: Now a mythology database.
Speaker A: A connections table across traditions — the schema reveals how myths travel and transform across cultures.
Speaker B: A content verification tool.
Speaker A: A myth score for entire articles — a content quality metric built on a debunking database.
Speaker B: An education tool.
Speaker A: Comparison mode for the same theme across three traditions — that's comparative mythology made interactive.
Speaker B: And a full application.
Speaker A: So 'myth' in a prompt means either: honour traditional stories in a cultural archive, or identify and correct false beliefs in a fact-checking system.
Speaker B: One word, two completely different systems — the context tells the AI which direction to go.
Speaker A: I'll use myth whenever I need the AI to work with foundational cultural narratives or to build tools for detecting and correcting false beliefs.
