Podcast 1 — Introduction & meaning
Narrator: Sunni. Two syllables. SUN-ee. The name of the world's largest Islamic tradition — and a word that carries fourteen centuries of history in three letters.
Narrator: Sunni is both an adjective and a noun. As an adjective it describes anything belonging to the Sunni tradition of Islam: a Sunni scholar, a Sunni mosque, a Sunni community. As a noun it refers to an individual adherent: she is a Sunni, or collectively, the Sunnis. The tradition accounts for roughly 85 to 90 percent of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, making Sunni Islam the single largest religious denomination on earth by number of adherents.
Narrator: The word derives from Arabic. The full name of the tradition is ahl as-sunnah wa'l-jama'ah — the people of the prophetic practice and the community. The key word is sunnah, from the Arabic root sanna, meaning to establish a way, to make something customary practice. The Sunnah as a body of knowledge comprises the recorded sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad, preserved in the hadith literature. For Sunni Muslims, the Sunnah stands alongside the Quran as the two primary sources of Islamic guidance.
Narrator: The historical divide between Sunni and Shia Islam emerged immediately after the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632 CE, centring on a single urgent question: who should lead the Muslim community? Sunnis held that the community itself should choose a leader from among the Prophet's companions. The first four caliphs — Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali — are known in Sunni tradition as the Rightly Guided Caliphs. The Shia, by contrast, held that leadership was divinely ordained and belonged to Ali and his descendants. This political disagreement deepened over generations into distinct theological, legal, and devotional traditions.
Narrator: In terms of usage, Sunni is a proper noun and should always be capitalised. It is used in academic, journalistic, political, and everyday contexts. When using it, precision matters: Sunni Islam is enormously diverse, spanning multiple legal schools, cultures, and theological currents across every continent. Sunni. The tradition of the prophetic way — the path followed by most of the world's Muslims for fourteen hundred years.
Speaker A: I was reading about the conflict in the Middle East and the article kept referring to Sunni and Shia communities. I understand they are both Muslim, but I was not entirely clear on what Sunni specifically means.
Speaker B: Right, it is one of those terms that appears constantly in news coverage but rarely gets explained properly. At the most basic level, Sunni refers to the larger of the two main branches of Islam. About 85 percent of Muslims worldwide are Sunni. The word comes from sunnah, which means the prophetic practice — so a Sunni Muslim is one who follows the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad as recorded in the hadith alongside the Quran.
Speaker A: And the split with the Shia — that goes all the way back to the beginning of Islam, does it not?
Speaker B: Exactly, to 632 CE, immediately after the Prophet's death. It was fundamentally a political dispute at first — who has the right to lead the Muslim community? Sunnis accepted Abu Bakr, the Prophet's close companion, as the first caliph, chosen by the community. The Shia believed leadership should pass to Ali, the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law, as a matter of divine designation. Over time that political disagreement grew into genuinely distinct religious traditions with different theologies, rituals, and legal schools.
Speaker A: Are there different types within Sunni Islam itself? I have heard terms like Hanafi and Maliki.
Speaker B: Yes — Sunni Islam contains four major legal schools, or madhabs, named after their founding scholars. Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali. They agree on the fundamentals but differ on certain points of Islamic law and ritual practice. A Sunni Muslim in Turkey is likely Hanafi; one in West Africa is likely Maliki; in Egypt you find mostly Shafi'i. These schools are all considered orthodox within Sunni Islam — they are not sects or divisions in the sense of separate faiths. Think of them more like different legal methodologies within the same tradition.
Speaker A: So when someone says they are Sunni, it is a broad identity, not a narrow one?
Speaker B: Exactly right. Sunni Islam spans an enormous range of cultures, practices, and theological emphases, from the strict Salafi tradition in Saudi Arabia to the mystical Sufi orders of North Africa and Central Asia, to the deeply traditional village Islam of rural Bangladesh. What they share is acceptance of the Sunnah as authoritative, acceptance of the first four caliphs, and adherence to one of the four legal schools. Within that shared framework there is extraordinary diversity.
Speaker B: Today we are building prompts around the word Sunni. These are prompts for apps that deal with religious community data, cultural awareness, or educational content. Six prompts — all practical, all immediately usable.
